Bullying Begins at Home: What Are We Teaching Our Children?
Research shows parents who model bullying raise children who bully. What we say about others at home follows our children to school. Respect is taught, leadership is modeled, and character is inherited through example.
Research consistently shows that parents who model bullying behavior are more likely to raise children who bully others . When adults are overbearing, controlling, aggressive, or demeaning at home, those behaviors don't stay behind closed doors — they follow children into classrooms, playgrounds, and communities. Parents are the first and most powerful influence in a child's life. During their formative years, children spend most of their time watching, listening, and learning from us. They absorb not only what we say directly to them, but also how we speak about others. When a parent casually calls someone a "loser" or mocks another person's intelligence, it sends a message. Children may not fully understand the context — but they understand the behavior . And sooner or later, what they see at home is what they repeat at school. We teach more by example than by instruction. WHAT MY FATHER TAUGHT ME ABOUT RESPECT I was blessed with a father who lived by three simple principles: 1. Tell the truth. 2. Respect all people, regardless of their background. 3. Be a leader. My father escaped communist Cuba in 1959. He came from a successful family that owned a sugar cane farm — everything was taken from them. He arrived in the United States with a bag of clothes, five dollars in his pocket, and a fourth-grade education . And yet, nothing stopped him. Through discipline, faith, hard work, and self-respect, he built a successful hardware business, owned two commercial buildings, and provided a beautiful home for his family in Queens. He valued education deeply — but he valued character even more . He taught me that no matter what anyone says about you, you do not let bullies define your life. You define it by how you treat others, how you grow, and what you build. EDUCATION IS MORE THAN BOOKS My father believed in education, but not just classroom learning. He believed in self-development, personal responsibility, and the pursuit of your God-given purpose . Most importantly, he believed that success without integrity means nothing. There is a difference between education and education with understanding — the kind that teaches us not only how to advance, but how to respect others while doing so . Life is not a race against one another. It is a journey of growth, character, and purpose. THE EXAMPLE WE SET BECOMES THEIR BEHAVIOR Bullying doesn't start in schools. It starts in homes where disrespect is normalized, where insults are casual, and where cruelty is excused as "just being honest" or "just joking." If we want children who: Stand up for others Show compassion Speak with integrity Lead with character Then we must model those qualities ourselves. Our words shape their worldview. Our behavior becomes their blueprint. FINAL THOUGHT We can complain about the culture our children are growing up in — or we can be the culture we want them to become . Respect is taught. Leadership is modeled. Character is inherited through example. And it all begins at home.
